The homicide of three Muslims in Chapel Hill, North Carolina devastated the community as well as causing racial tensions to escalate. The victims of this crime were a male and two females. All of them attending the University of Connecticut.
Many people feel the shock of such a terrible crime but none more so than other Muslims who feel as if a hate crime had been committed towards them.
The suspect is being investigated by the FBI for the possibility of these slayings being part of a hate crime. The controversy lies in the exposure of the content, including pictures of the victims or the news itself. People may cover the killings of a Caucasian person however, it was quite a while before the homicides of these three Muslims came to light.
Many people are using social media to bring to light what had happened using hashtags such as #MuslimLivesMatter and #ChapelHillShooting. They feel like “White” media has been racially unjust to Muslims. The question here is: Was this just senseless slaughter or a hate crime directed towards a certain ethnic group?
While it is a terrible thing people are killing each other for any reason, we should remember that all life is precious and not any one should matter, as we are all humans. We all feel the same things, we all live on the same Earth. We may have different thoughts and opinions however, that does not make us enemies.
Rather than resorting to violence or outright disagreeing with each other, as humans we should strive to understand one another and learn from our mistakes.
