Haggen’s “Northwest Fresh” grocery store bought out Albertons at State Route 2 in Monroe. The store had its grand opening last month.
The Haggen corporation spent $9.4 billion on the purchase of select Albertons and Safeway stores within the state. According to the Federal Trade Commission, Haggen bought some Albertsons and Safeway stores to remain in compliance.
Dave Hayes, the store director for the Monroe Haggen said “It is a very exciting time to be part of the new Haggen Company. It feels like we are being run as an independent. We have the ability to make decisions that are right for my customers and associates.” He went on to explain "It is not about the name on the front of the building. It’s about the associates within the building.”
The merger allows customers access to fresh and local produce, a luxury Albertsons did not offer. The Washington-based company supports local farmers in the community. By bringing local farmers into the stores and onto the shelves Haggen is able to have an expanded selection of organics, Gluten Free, along with natural & fresh made products
Hayes has been part of the Albertsons/Haggen Family for over 36 years. “I honestly love what I do. I enjoy having a positive impact on people’s lives, personally and professionally. It’s much more than just selling groceries for me. It’s about gaining community relationships,". In an effort to gain community relationships the store donated $1,000 to the Sky Valley food bank.
